Amanda, if you want to learn darn near ANYTHING, you can Google it or watch a YouTube. You are most correct. However, there is nothing more valuable than having a GUIDE --- an entity or someone who curates (collects the best) information available on the subject FOR YOU. Upsolve provides a Chapter 7 bankruptcy roadmap for you to follow and, based on your answers to questions, even FORMATS the forms containing your info so you can file "pro se" (representing yourself), thus saving you time and $$$. This is what this community is for: asking questions and learning the answers! :-)

Are there ProBono Lawyer’s to help with Chapter 7 Hardship Bankruptcy? I can’t afford anything as my car keeps breaking down on me! I can’t really pay the fee to file bankruptcy!

Jill, TWO years ago at this time, I was asking the same question to the universe. I had never heard of Upsolve. I went to my local Legal Aid Society armed with all of my financials and my Nolo Press book stressed beyond mental boundaries. I was on a mission...

Upsolve Community Member
...and guess what? The Legal Aid Society in Long Beach doesn't handle bankruptcies! I was crushed. THIS was supposed to be the way I was going to get pro bono assistance and now it was back to square one and Google. This is the day I discovered Upsolve.

...and I found that Upsolve's Learning Center was as good or BETTER than my Nolo Press book because when I GOT STARTED with the online Interview at Upsolve and had questions, I found that by entering darn near any question I had in the Learning Center's search box, my questions were answered.

Jill, if I can do this, YOU can do this and, if you need an attorney to tackle an issue or two, OK. ---- the combo of pro se (representing yourself) OR Upsolve together with an hour or two of an attorney's time at their prevailing rate (or free if you can find it!) is a great option! That is what I do with my taxes: I use TurboTax to file myself but have a CPA "on-call" if I have any tough stuff!

Good luck and thanks for reading my long post. Happy New Year! :-)

i'm on disability. i only get 814 a month. a lawyer told me, that because i don't own anything except for my dakota, i have a case called: motion to dismiss. i have roughly $13K in loan/credit card debt, with 1 loan being tied to my truck title (it's a lien, the truck was bought and paid for with cash), and another loan that has personal property (movies, video games, etc). nothing i own comes anywhere near the amount i owe in debt, my truck ain't even worth the amount it'll take to pay off the lien (credit karma says my truck is worth less than 2500. the loan pay off is almost 7K). how would i be able to file for bankruptcy and keep my truck and my personal property?

Can I file bankruptcy chapter 7 online if I don't use an attorney? The court where I have to file is not close to me, and I don't have a car or money to get there.

Your court may (or may not) have online filing and filing by mail options. You can search their website to see if that option is available to you!

Hi Cleo, Upsolve really makes the process of filing bankruptcy easier. If you decide to file online directly with a court, I highly recommend you review the https://upsolve.org/learn/pacer-guide/. It will help you become familiar with the electronic filing system. Some courts only allowed online filing with the Covid pandemic. With the new surge, some courts might again offer the opportunity to file online. The article https://upsolve.org/learn/courts-covid/ has some useful information about the online bankruptcy filing process.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
