How long does it take to get a bankruptcy filed in Oklahoma to stop a repossession?

That's a good question!

Before filing, when to file and how long it takes is generally up to you. As an Upsolve user, the sooner you complete the questionnaire, the sooner the generated forms will be available, generally speaking.

Once you file, the process takes between 4-6 months. You can learn more here! https://upsolve.org/learn/chapter-7-bankruptcy-timeline/

Im 24 years old, have came into quite a bit of debt. Partially due to the obvious young age and making poor choices (I.E. lifestyle inflation etc.), along with switching roles at my job for less pay. The reason for that was a quality of life imporvment. No more long nights, massive amounts of OT, constant stress and so on. Would filing for this make my life harder? Or with my young age would it make it eaiser than paying back the 25k+ in debt? Anxious on making the life choice here.

One of the things to consider is whether you could repay your current unsecured debt in 5 years if nothing at all changes about your income, the balances, or the interest rates. Of course, timing plays a role here too. It's not ok to run up more CC debt than one can handle and then turn around to file bankruptcy. But that's not the same thing as dealing with a mistake from your past by seeking protection in bankruptcy court now.

Devyn, I commend you for being REAL! The first step is acknowledging that some poor choices were made along the way. Very few would admit that, yet we ALL have made some poor choices during our life journey. I am reading GREAT NEWS in your post because you KNOW who it is up to learn new habits, such as setting up a budget and STICKING TO IT.  Since I filed Chapter 7 in 2020, I have "raised" $30,000 by pivoting and working side gigs. Sure, I was the beneficiary of the Stimulus payments, but that same $25K (the debt you say you have) was "raised" in less than a couple of years' time. We are all different animals in how we live life, but I will give you a personal opinion based on your intelligent post that you can pay that off. That's just my opinion! Good luck in making your decisions ahead. :-).  P.S. There is a https://my.upsolve.org/rooms/19 forum section in this Community that just opened. I look forward to seeing you there!

I am 74 and not physically well. I watched my perfect payment history go bad due to the impact of Covid. I am terrified to try to do this on my own but cannot afford an attorney. How difficult is it to do my own chapter 7?

Hi Sonja, I am approaching 70 and am here to say: "You got this!". Of course, you need to take care of your health first and financial woes can be stressful. Imagine 6 months from now coming out of the dark tunnel of financial anxiety into the daylight of a Fresh Start! I am a testimony that this CAN happen! The late Johnny Nash wrote: "I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It's gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day!"  You'll get there! Stay close! This Community is here for you! Good luck! :-)

Using Upsolve to file bankruptcy in December of last year was one of the best decisions I ever made. I was able to get out of debt, stop a creditor that garnishing my wages. Most importantly it has given me a new financial life. My credit score when I filed was in the mid 522. Now nearly 11 months later my 708 according to TransUnion. I was able to buy a new Car in July of this year with an interest rate of 3 percent. (I also put 20 percent down on the car). Finally I just got a unsecured credit card from Capital One. While it was scary filing and it was worth it.

Here’s a post of encouragement for everyone. I finally had my 341 Meeting today. Its taken me 8 months from when I first admitted to myself this might be my only hope. The first four months I was ashamed to share and felt guilty. Shortly after I realized I’d be more ashamed if I held my new family back because of my past. Then I procrastinated. Power through the emotions. Feel them, acknowledge them then take another step in the right direction. Be sure to check your physical mail and don’t wait to get things in order. I paid a hefty shipping fee at usps to deliver my trustee packet the week before my meeting. You made it here, thats the hardest part. Now be truthful, trust your gut and file.

I'm happy to read your post, Mateo! Yep. The first obstacles are ourselves and our pride. Denial can be a real problem so give yourself a high five for persevering and getting to this point. Thanks for the encouragement to your fellow Upsolvers! Good luck to you the rest of the way! :-)

So much powerful advice in your post Mateo! I'm sure your encouragement will help others! Bankruptcy is a form of help, and so many people find it hard to ask for help. Asking for help takes a LOT more strength than not asking for help. I'm glad you found the strength to file bankruptcy and persevere through the process to create a fresh start for you and your family. Keep us posted when you get your discharge notice! Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
