Filing bankruptcy can help with credit card debt, medical bills, and other types of unsecured debt, but not all debt. It's helpful to know https://upsolve.org/learn/non-dischargeable-debts-bankruptcy-filing/ before you file bankruptcy.

Hi Lynn, I also recommend reading https://upsolve.org/learn/bank-account-garnished/. It discusses the limits on bank garnishments.

I read the article on Bank account garnishment, however I’m not sure I understand it completely. It said it could garnish electronic deposits but not paper checks or cash deposits, Did I get that right?

Upsolve Community Member
Hm, it might be a bit more complicated than that- try reading that article again and this one might help too: https://upsolve.org/learn/stop-wage-garnishment/

I want to make sure I can keep my car and one of the credit cards. The one with the lowest balance. Is this possible?

I have done my best to keep making payment but this month will be the first that I will not be able to make payments on my credit cards. And, with school starting next month I don't see how I will be able to make payments anymore. What should I do? I just don't have the money. Will this affect my credit even more? Is there anything I can do to minimize the damage on my credit.

That article is a good resource to learn more about what may happen next, and can point you in the direction of some options

Hello Jesus!  The articles above will help you. Although a few months later I filed Chapter 7 using Upsolve, the first step I took when I knew I was in trouble was to CALL MY CREDITORS and explain the situation. All of them put me on a program that lowered my interest rates and monthly payments. For many, this can be a temporary solution until you are back on their feet! :-)

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
