How Much Do Bankruptcy Lawyers in Cleveland Charge?

Filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is the least expensive bankruptcy process available to consumers. This process doesn’t cost filers as much as a Chapter 13 bankruptcy does because Chapter 7 bankruptcy is much more straightforward. Nonetheless, individuals seeking to file under Chapter 7 can expect to pay anywhere from $690 - $1,200 in Cleveland bankruptcy attorneys’ fees for help preparing their bankruptcy petition, submitting it to the Court and defending it, if necessary. This range of attorneys’ fees appears odd at first glance. Why does one attorney charge $700 and another charges $1,150 for the same services? Oftentimes, these discrepancies result from differing levels of legal experience, location, the complexity of a filer’s case, etc.

Free Bankruptcy Filing with Upsolve

Most individuals interested in filing for bankruptcy don’t feel that they can afford the assistance of a bankruptcy attorney. Even if the benefits that bankruptcy provides are worth a significant financial investment, they simply don’t have income available to cover the cost of attorneys’ fees. Thankfully, those that need to work with a bankruptcy lawyer to effectively and efficiently file their cases are usually offered flexible payment plans. Additionally, many filers don’t actually need to work with a bankruptcy attorney to successfully prepare and submit their cases. If you don’t earn much income, you’re probably eligible to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. As previously mentioned, the process of filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is surprisingly straightforward. As long as filers are willing to follow directions provided by the Court carefully, they should be able to feel confident completing this process without paid legal assistance. If you’re interested in filing “pro se” (without an attorney) but you’re intimidated by the work ahead of you, know that there are many excellent resources available to assist you, in addition to the step-by-step instructions provided by the Court. For example, the non-profit organization Upsolve provides personalized assistance to certain eligible filers. Even if you don’t qualify to take advantage of this resource, you can access free guides (without any kind of login required) at any time on the Upsolve website. These guides are designed to help low-income filers successfully complete the bankruptcy process without hiring attorney. Working with an attorney can be a low-stress way to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, while filing pro se saves money. Only you know which approach is right for you.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations.
