If you decide to hire an attorney to help you with your bankruptcy case, you’re going to need to clarify how much they’ll charge you for helping to prepare required paperwork, advocate on your behalf, and prepare you for your Trustee meeting. The cost of a bankruptcy lawyer in Dallas varies depending on the professional’s level of experience, what chapter of bankruptcy you’re filing under, and the complexity of your finances. For example, if you’re filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you can expect to pay anywhere from $975 - $2,000 for an attorney’s assistance with your case. You can expect to pay higher attorneys’ fees if you’re filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy because that process is much more complex and time-intensive.
Free Bankruptcy Filing with Upsolve
The cost of paying for an attorney’s guidance, practical assistance, and expertise can be understandably daunting for many filers. After all, both individuals and families seeking debt relief don’t tend to have any disposable income available to them. Thankfully, there are ways to make receiving informed counsel more financially manageable. For example, many attorneys who handle Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases allow their clients to pay them in relatively flexible installments with a minimal initial amount “down” on the overall cost. This allows filers to manage their attorneys’ fees more easily and often helps to ensure that the bulk of an attorney’s fees aren’t due until the filer is benefiting from the relief afforded by an automatic stay.
Attorneys who handle Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases often charge a relatively modest flat fee for their services and may not require any fee upfront. It’s important to remember however, that filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is such a straightforward process that many filers don’t require the assistance of an attorney at all to successfully prepare and submit their case. As long as filers follow the instructions provided by the Court assigned to decide their case, they can file for bankruptcy without having to invest in an attorney’s services if that is simply not in the budget. That isn’t to say filers shouldn’t take advantage of free resources as they are preparing to file for bankruptcy, though. For example, the non-profit organization Upsolve provides many state-specific and city-specific guides to bankruptcy on its website, along with a host of other resources. Eligible Chapter 7 filers may even be able to benefit for more personalized assistance from Upsolve for free.
