How Much Do Bankruptcy Lawyers in San Antonio Charge?

Law firms charge different rates for their services based on a few different factors. For example, attorneys who are Board certified and have been practicing bankruptcy law for 30 years are probably going to charge more for the benefit of their experience than attorneys who graduated from law school 3 or 4 years ago. Also, bankruptcy attorneys charge more for assistance with cases that are complex. For example, Chapter 7 case assistance costs less than assistance with Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases because filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is far more straightforward than filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy is. It is safe to say that most Chapter 7 filers can expect to pay between $975 - $2,000 in San Antonio bankruptcy attorneys’ fees, whereas Chapter 13 filers will typically pay more than that amount, but often over a longer period of time.

Free Bankruptcy Filing with Upsolve

Please don’t panic if the cost of a bankruptcy attorney’s services seems insurmountable for your family’s budget. There are ways to make the costs associated with filing for bankruptcy more manageable. Those who opt to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy can usually work with their attorneys to set up manageable payment plans and relatively minimal upfront fees. Sometimes, the act of spreading out the cost of an attorney’s assistance makes that investment more manageable financially.

Chapter 7 filers are often offered a payment schedule that consists of either a flat fee or $0 down and flexible payment options. However, it’s important to understand that Chapter 7 filers may not need to invest in an attorney’s services at all. Many Chapter 7 filers choose to save money by preparing necessary paperwork and submitting it to the Court without a lawyer’s help. It’s not usually advisable to file legal action without first hiring an attorney for guidance and experienced support. However, the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process is relatively straightforward. Filers who commit to following the Court’s directions carefully can successfully file on their own if they want to save money. Additionally, these filers can benefit from free resources, like the general, state-specific, and city-specific bankruptcy guides on Upsolve’s website. Upsolve is a non-profit organization that helps bankruptcy filers gain access to the information they need to make the bankruptcy process work for them. Some eligible filers can even receive personalized assistance from the Upsolve team at no cost.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
