New York, New York -- This morning, Upsolve, a national technology nonprofit, announced that it has relieved over $250 million in debt for low-income and working-class families across the United States. Launched nationally just over two years ago, Upsolve provides a web application that helps individuals file bankruptcy for free on their own.
Over $50 million of the debt that Upsolve relieved has been for Black Americans. Upsolve users are two times more likely to be Black than White.
Rohan Pavuluri, CEO and co-founder of Upsolve, remarked, “America is facing a new civil rights movement and a historic financial crisis. At Upsolve, we’re taking concrete action to create a more equitable justice system. We’re also making America’s social safety net more accessible for families who face financial shocks tied to COVID-19 like job loss and medical illness.”
Over the last year, Upsolve has expanded beyond its web application, recently launching an extensive learning center and online support group. According to Pavuluri, “Through our app, education, and community, our goal is to be the best place on the internet for anyone in severe financial distress.” Since its inception, over two million unique individuals have visited Upsolve's website.
This year, Upsolve also added Alisa Pratt to its Board of Directors. Pratt is a Bronx community leader, a former Upsolve beneficiary, and a recipient of the 2019 Robin Hood Foundation Heroes Award. According to Pratt, “Millions of people across America suffer from debt-based poverty. I feel lucky to support Upsolve as they serve the individuals experiencing hardship that nobody could’ve predicted a year ago.”
