In a Nutshell

The kind of Portland bankruptcy each individual and business is eligible to file varies based on certain criteria. For example, only low-income households qualify to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, while most other consumers file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. By contrast, Chapter 11 bankruptcy is generally reserved for businesses and high net-worth individuals. Bankruptcy law is complex and it can therefore be difficult to know which debt relief options are applicable to you and which Portland bankruptcy attorney is most likely to be a “good fit” for your financial situation. If you’re thinking about filing for bankruptcy but you aren’t sure exactly where to start, consider reading the profiles of Portland law offices listed below. Each one will introduce you to a law firm that practices consumer bankruptcy. Once you identify which bankruptcy lawyers you’d like to learn more about, you can contact them directly for more information.

How Much Do Bankruptcy Lawyers in Portland Charge?

The question of how much you’ll pay in Portland bankruptcy attorneys’ fees depends quite a bit on the Chapter of the Bankruptcy Code you’re filing under. Bankruptcy lawyers charge less for assistance with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case than they do for providing support throughout a Chapter 13 or a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. Whereas Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases only take a few hours to prepare, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases take much more time to resolve. Fees also vary due to the experience level of an attorney, etc. In general, anyone who chooses to hire a bankruptcy attorney to assist with their Chapter 7 bankruptcy case can expect to pay between $499 - $1,500 in Portland bankruptcy attorneys’ fees.

Free Bankruptcy Filing with Upsolve

Now that you’re probably sweating at the thought of having to come up with that much money in attorneys’ fees, it’s time to step back and remember – if you’re filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and you don’t want to hire a lawyer to help you, you don’t have to invest in the legal services of an Oregon bankruptcy attorney. As long as you follow the directions provided by the Court closely, you can file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on your own. If you’d like to hire a bankruptcy law firm to assist you or you need help due to one circumstance or another, you can find a great bankruptcy lawyer with relative ease. But because the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process is purposefully straightforward, you don’t need professional guidance the way you would if you were filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 13 or Chapter 11. If you choose to file “pro se” (without an attorney), make sure to take advantage of free, quality resources available to you. The Court usually posts a number of helpful resources on its website and you can also find free, updated bankruptcy guides on the Upsolve website. Upsolve is a non-profit organization with a mission to help low-income filers successfully navigate the bankruptcy process at little or no cost. In addition to the many accessible guides that Upsolve publishes and keeps updated, the Upsolve team provides more personalized filing assistance for eligible filers.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
