In a Nutshell

If you’re thinking about filing for Milwaukee bankruptcy, it’s important to understand that you have more debt relief options available to you than most individuals across the country do. Ordinarily, when individuals (who aren’t business owners, farmers, or commercial fisherman) want to file for bankruptcy, they do so by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Very occasionally, consumers have a reason to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is usually a process reserved for businesses or high net-worth individuals. But in Wisconsin, there is also an option to file under Wisconsin Statute Section 128, which is not a debt relief option for residents of other states. If you’re interested in speaking with a bankruptcy lawyer about your debt relief options, consider reading the profiles of Milwaukee bankruptcy law firms listed below. Once you learn about each bankruptcy attorney’s practice, you can contact any that might be a good fit for your situation.

How Much Do Bankruptcy Lawyers in Milwaukee Charge?

Understandably, many individuals become preoccupied with the issue of Milwaukee bankruptcy attorneys’ fees when they’re thinking about filing for bankruptcy. As Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin, services tend to be more expensive here than they are in less populated areas of the state. Additionally, due to a variety of factors, including differing levels of experience among attorneys, the location of law firms, etc., there is no single “set” fee amount that bankruptcy lawyers charge for their services in Milwaukee. Generally speaking, an individual thinking about filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case in Milwaukee can expect to pay anywhere from $1,250 - $1,665 for the benefit of an attorney’s guidance and support. Chapter 128 filers may pay less, but Chapter 13 and Chapter 11 filers will certainly pay more, due to the complexity of their cases.

Free Bankruptcy Filing with Upsolve

Most low-income households that are eligible to file for bankruptcy relief under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code don’t have the ability to pay such a steep rate for attorneys’ fees. Thankfully, if you’re eligible for Chapter 7 bankruptcy relief, you probably don’t have to invest in an attorney’s legal services in the first place. Paying steep attorneys’ fees is often a necessary investment for filers of Chapter 13 bankruptcy and Chapter 11 bankruptcy, because these processes are too complex to navigate without professional guidance. However, filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is so clear-cut that the Court even provides step-by-step directions for those filers who want to represent themselves (“pro se”) instead of hiring a bankruptcy attorney. If you can afford to hire an attorney to help you prepare your bankruptcy case, you have many great options available to you in the Milwaukee area. However, if you can’t afford assistance know that many Chapter 7 filers have successfully prepared their cases themselves and you almost certainly can too. But if the idea of filing for bankruptcy yourself still seems a little intimidating, know that a host of valuable resources is available to you at all times. The non-profit organization Upsolve is dedicated to the mission of helping low-income filers successfully work through the bankruptcy process at little or no cost to them. In this spirit, the Upsolve team has published (and continually updates) both general and geographically specific guides to the bankruptcy process that are accessible to the public for free. Additionally, eligible Chapter 7 filers may be able to benefit from more personalized filing assistance from the Upsolve team a well.
