Federal Taxes: All taxpayers are eligible to claim a standard deduction from their taxable income. This amount is based on your filing status and household size. If your taxable income is above the deduction amount for the year in question, you are required to file. If your income is below the deduction amount, you are not required to file. You can find the deduction amount for 2018 on the IRS website here, and for 2017 here. For all other years, simply change the year in the URL that appears when you click on these links to the year in question.

State Taxes: If you are required a Federal Tax return, you usually need to file a state tax return as well. If you are not required to file a Federal Tax return, you do not need to file a state tax return either. Some states do not require you to file solely based on your Federal filing status. You can find the specific requirements for your state here.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.

To learn more, read why we started Upsolve in 2016, our reviews from past users, and our press coverage from places like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
