Living in the District can be a hectic affair. From trying to avoid getting stuck behind motorcades to avoiding the chaos of protesters, it can be uniquely difficult to find peace and consistency when living in Washington D.C. This is perhaps especially true for families struggling to pay the bills. When this happens, it’s often impossible to leave your stressors on the streets of D.C. When financial catastrophe strikes, stress follows you home. Thankfully, there are legal options to obtain relief available to families who are having a hard time making ends meet. One of the most effective solutions available isChapter 7 bankruptcy. If your income is less than a certain amount  and you meet requirements limits set by the Court in its Chapter 7 Means Test, you may qualify for thecancellation of most or all of your debt. Unlike other forms of DC bankruptcy relief, Chapter 7 provides you with permanent relief in as little as 90 days while keeping most or all of your property.

Discharge in Bankruptcy for Washington, DC

When a successful Chapter 7 District of Columbia bankruptcy is complete, your eligible debts (includingmedical bills, credit card debt and someoverdue taxes) will be erased. The Court’s order that erases your debts in this way is called a District of Columbia bankruptcy discharge. The government has an interest in making sure that only folks who don’t have the means to pay at least some of their debts are eligible to receive their Washington DC bankruptcy discharge in a Chapter 7 case, as it deprives creditors of their ability to collect. Therefore, each debtor must pass the Chapter 7 Means Test to qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.

Upsolve is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2016. Our mission is to help low-income families who cannot afford lawyers file bankruptcy for free, using an online web app. Spun out of Harvard Law School, our team includes lawyers, engineers, and judges. We have world-class funders that include the U.S. government, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and leading foundations. It's one of the greatest civil rights injustices of our time that low-income families can’t access their basic rights when they can’t afford to pay for help. Combining direct services and advocacy, we’re fighting this injustice.
